Security is a hot topic for me - I have had cars stolen as well as motorbikes and numerous brake in's over the years. I live in a good area but often forced to park on the street out of my line of site for work.

After i had my bike stolen I commissioned a huge heavy ground anchor and installed it into the concrete garage floor, attached a huge heavy duty chain, bought a sturdy tools cabinet (so the scum cant use my tools to cut the chain etc) and even installed security cameras inside and outside.

Now my car is not particularly secure however. it is not a very desirable car to steal nor is there usually anything of real value inside - but this does not stop me worrying since I have no insurance (not many do in NZ as its not legal requirement).

I was thinking about a steering lock - that in conjunction with an alarm system would be an ideal combination.

The steering wheel is however not stock and is a moto lita type wheel. There seems to be very little stopping someone from just undoing the screws and removing the wheel. Even if I replace them with shear bolts the main headstock bolt can still be accessed by lifting the centre cap and the whole lot then removed!

Any way around this?

You could disconnect one or a few leads in the engine bay? Apart from getting in they dont really want to be hanging around trying to source the problem of starting it, so it could kindly tell them to eff off and try another!

Bit of a hassle if its used everyday, but you may end up advertising it by having your bonnet up before you leave the car everytime?

Still, every little helps

:)

You can get steering locks that cover the entire wheel

Ive got a kill switch on mine aswell, so once thats flicked the car cannot start.
You could also invest in an alarm, and an immobilisor.

Oh just remembered a friend of mine puts a bike lock around the wheel and suspension arm of his jeep. Simple but effective.

It taks less than 5 seconds to get one off, using just your bare hands.

as for the original post - the discklock style wheel covers are very well regarded here and one of the best physical deterrants you can get. They come in a couple of sizes so make sure you get the right one for your wheel.

Cheers folks, one thing I plan to do in very near future is change the bonnet release catch to internal. Then I can fit an alarm system without someone just opening the bonnet and unplugging the thing !

its just a case of unscrewing the gear knob, and sliding it off, i had one once and when someone pointed that out i threw it in the bin. got a disclok that covers the whole wheel now for when i park in particularly bad areas.

One of these is all you need.

DISCARNECT

Just take the knob off it whenever you park your car and take it with you. Nobody can start your car without a battery.
