The standard battery fitted to most mini's is a type 038 or 015 (same battery) 12v 38 amp battery 270CCA car battery which is 245mm long x 135mm deep x 200mm high, with the terminals closest to you positive is on the left side.

The battery tray in most minis has space for a larger battery i personaly use a type 090, 065 or 075 (same size batteries just normaly labeled differently) 12v 55-60ah 480CCA-600CCA power ratings vary depending on brands, which is 240mm long x 175mm deep x 175mm high positive on the right hand side with the terminals closest to you (the wires on my 3 mini's are long enough to fit so shouldnt be a problem). this battery is a tight fit and it would be helpful if you got one with a handel attached.

The 090 is a bigger more powerful battery and probably overkill but it fits snugly and if you have added extras it would be better.

To give an idea on price at my work (The Battery Shop www.thebatteryshop.co.uk :- ) we sell 090's at £46.00 2 year warranty or £51.87 3 year warranty and an 038 is £36.99 with 3 year warranty. Unfortunatly we can not ship them, they are only available for local collection, we are in swindon, wiltshire.

I woulnt recommend buying one from halfords as they are normaly twice the price, its worth shopping around localy.

Hope this helps

Whilst it's refreshing to find someone referring to batteries properly by type number, you state that several batteries with different codes are the same. They aren't. Although they have the same case dimensions and capacity, there are several different internal constructions of battery. Batteries can be standard, heavy duty, deep cycle, high performance or a couple of other types. For example 015 is a heavy duty version of 038 (or possibly the other way around, I can't remember). Each battery type is better for a specific type of use than others. Diesel engines for example generally need a heavy duty battery to start them. Leisure batteries used in caravans as a power source tend to be deep cycle. The differences are due to details of the construction such as the thickness of the grids and spacing of the plates. So while two batteries may have the same voltage, capacity and maximum delivery the way they deliver power is different, as is the internal resistance which affects how they recharge.
