The car is a '93 Italian job that we have just bought off a mate. This is the first mini project we've had, and aparently the steering rack needs to be replaced. We were told that the steering "just went" on a roundabout. But the steering seems ok now. We think the rack could be missing a tooth and therefore needs replacing? Does that sound right?

If this is the case any advice on how to change it would be great!! Is the Haynes manual way the best way to do it?
Thanks!

Sounds very much like the steering column is loose on the rack.

The bottom of the steering colum slides over a splined shaft sticking up from the rack. The column is split at the lower end and clamped tight onto the rack with a pinch bolt. I'd check this first before diving under the car, especially as you'll have to remove this bolt to fit a new rack anyway.

Check the steering rack U-bolts aswell, you will see them if you lift the carpets up, midway'ish on the heel board.

Thanks for the quick replies, ill have a look in the morning. Ive already undone the pinch bolt at the bottom of the steering column in preperation for removing the rack, it was tight but i havn't seen the condition of the spline yet.

Ill have a look in the morning and will also check the U bolts are tight as you suggest.
It just confuses me as the steering seems fine now?

has a steering column drop bracket been fitted?

it could be that the teeth inside the steering column that have worn and its just turning on the pinch bolt. this happened to mine as the steering column had been lowered and the u-bolts hadn't been loosened before tilting the column.

so take off the column, and check the teeth on it...

Thanks chappy, pulled the column off and the splines on the bottom of it are really badly worn so we will replace the column and take it from there.
