Hi!

I have a -72 Clubman, with a standard 998 engine (I have a remote change gearbox with the tunnel, not the newer rod change). Just did a rebuild of the engine and put it back in, but now the gearstick sort of vibrates or shakes quite alot. It doesn't feel like there is just vibration, but a mechanical knocking on the stick (hard to explain in english, sorry). If it had been just vibrating from the enginevibrations it should stop if I just lay my hand on the stick, but you can feel something pulling the stick up/down(I think, were a couple of months since I drove it, and then I just drove it a little bit, maybe 3-4 miles to another garage, where it has been all winter). I did not touch anything in the gearbox, and it worked fine before the rebuild, no shaking then.

I don't recall any excessive vibrations or shaking in the chassis/rest of the car, only the gearstick. What could I have messed up to cause this effect? Could the driveshafts somehow cause this? At my first very short testrun it vibrated/shaked even more, but now when I drove it to the winterstorage it had calmed a bit but it was still there.

What should I check when I go to pick it up in a few weeks? Any ideas?

Thank you in advance, all help greatly appreciated!

I would check all of your engine mounts (did you replace them during the rebuild) and any extra steady bars that may be fitted?

Did you replace the rubber mount at the end of the Remote Housing?

Yes all the engine mounts are new and fresh, so that shouldn't be causing any problem. No I did not touch the remote housing other than losing it from the gearbox, then it just hung there under the car, so I haven't replaced or looked at that rubber mount. Will write that up on the to-do list and order in a new one just in case! Thank you!

EDIT: Engine steady bars, how many are there? I can only recall the engine mounts themselves, and the one which is located on the top-left (standing in front of the engine bay) corner of the bay, and goes between the engine block and just to the right of the "clutch-pipe-mount" on the (bulkhead?). Should there be any more steady bars?

If you left the remote just hung from the rear mounting for a time it may have damaged it? Also, if it had been on for some years then it may have perished (gone brittle) with all the years of road salt, grit etc. It is made up of rubber bonded to a steel plate and will eventually tear away, if it has then your gear stick would go up and down as you accelerate/decelerate as it will only be mouted to the gearbox???

It would be worth replacing the original engine steady (clutch end of block) bushes with new (poy type) or you could fit an extra steady bar on the other end of the block - from the bulkhead to the engine using the 3 x thermostat housing bolts, I think it's referred to and sold as "Ultimate" steady bar. Have a look on MinSpares Site.

The remote didn't hung there, it came out wrong, I placed a spare wheel under it so that it could rest on that! But I still believe I have to replace the rear mounting, because as you said it hasn't been touched for quite some years.

And thank you for the info on steady bars, will definintely replace the bushings on the one I got and get another one for the thermostat housing!

Thanks!

There should be the engine steady on the top of the engine by the clutch assembly, and also shouldnt there be one on the gearbox as well?? Not certain on your gearbox arrangment
