I've fitted an SW5 cam to my 998 and have a problem with rattley tappets!!

I've set them to 15thou and they are still noisy.

I've read a couple of articles that suggest that they can be reduced to 12 thou?

Anyone done this or have any thoughts on doing this?

I don't want to wipe out my nice new cam!!

I'm sure mine said 15thou and a bit of looking around seemed to verify that.

They're not noisy noisy, just a bit tappety and they are getting on my nerves!!

Not sure if being an MPI makes any difference?????

It's just the nature of the thing, to make what is basically a mild cam perform so well the valves have to open wide and really quickly. Which just makes it noisier than a old style cam.
Have you checked the rocker shaft ? or was that part of the kit.

The rocker assembly is the old one

Rocker shaft looked ok, no obvious signs of wear there.

If its normal for it to be a bit noisy then thats fine, I'll live with it.

(or buy a louder stereo!!)

Yup, ran it up without the cover on, no real difference.

Its only a slight noise, I may just be being picky!!

I keep getting the sound of the clock ticking confused with the tappets!!

Actually it may not even be the tappets making the noise, it could even be my butler in the back clinking glasses!!!

I've just been looking at cams trying to come up with a definitive timing figure for mine. The info I have on the SW5 suggests you could reduce that to 14thou (says 16thou at the cam so works out as 13.33 at the valve with std rockers)

My motor has an SW5 and 1:5 roller rockers.

The tappits are set to 15 thou and it is really quiet. much nicer than the old 60k spi motor it replaced.

If you are running stock rockers it should be at 12 thou....not 15 thou.
I got this from Swiftune when I got my sw5.
