Evening all - just starting a small resto on my previously cowboy'd mini and drained the brakes ..... I'm guessing this is not right - it's full of rust particles as well!! - I'll be replacing all brake runs anyway but just wondered how old this could be??

brake fluid is hydroscopic meaning water is drawn towards it and get absorbed, water can enter via the cap, seals, and even rubber hoses

so ovetime the water works on the back of the caliper pistons and the inside of the braking system making rust particle

brake fluid needs changing a minimum of every 2 years

i do mine every year makes a huge difference

also brake fluids a lubricant so sticking brakes can normally be traced to old fluid

Yes very old fluid there.

Brake and clutch fluid should be replaced at the same time and at least once a year.

I suggest that you consider buying alternating coloured fluid too - you can get the honey coloured dot4 as well as green dot4. That way when your bleeding and flushing etc you will start to see the new fluid easily and means you use less fluid !

I like the coloured fluids,

My old LC had Red 2T oil, green gearbox oil, blue coolant and yellow brake fluid.

With clear hoses wherever possible it was quite funky!
