Nightflier and I had been informed about this place, by a few friends. So, today, we decided that we would go and take a look!

When we arrived, there was a site manager there. I had a word with him ... and unfortunately, he wouldn't let us inside, for health and safety reasons. :dozing: So photos are all taken outside and through the windows!

When talking to him, he told us what was going to happen to the place ... ;)

The asylum was shut down in 1999. It was sold to a private family in 2000 and they owned it for 7 years. Unfortunately the family had a massive argument and had to sell the site on. It's now fallen in to the hands of a development company and, I hate to say it, the majority of it is to be completely flattened and is going to be home to a load of new housing ...

These are just a few of the features that we found and a few of the photos that I took. :xxx:

What a shame it's going to be at the mercy of the bulldozers, there's some lovely period pieces there, that beautiful tiled floor would look great in my hallway ;)

It is a huge shame that it's going to be torn down...

These are a few of the different buildings that are going to be demolished ... ;)

When we were walking just walking to the car to leave, the site manager was there with another keeper/owner. I thanked the site manager for letting us walk around the site. He said "You must have found something you like ... you've been here 2 1/2 hours!!"

Which is when I told him that I thought the buildings were fantastic and it's such a shame that they are going to be knocked down and that I'd fallen completely in love with the whole site and all the buildings.

The other owner said "How? What's beautiful about it?"

I could have attacked her there and then :xxx:

I have such a passion for old buildings and architecture and to find something that raw and untouched and on SUCH a massive scale is so rare and so special. Because these developers have so much money, they can just get what they want. So, something that's so beautiful can just be wiped out without them even thinking about it.

It just makes me so mad that the people that care about such things just don't have the money to save them

its a shame there are people like that, all they care about is money. if they own that they usually have enough to live comfortably. i hate people like that, they need a dry slap.

I totally agree with your views, the old psychiatric hospital - St Johns - just outside Lincoln looked like it was going the same way after it closed many years ago, but fortunately the developers converted a lot of the Victorian ward blocks into accommodation, so at least some of the history was saved ;)

It's hard to believe that it's cheaper to demolish everything and 'new build' rather than renovating, but that seems to be the way things are going at present - sadly :xxx:

Rachel ... I completely agree with you about the flooring. I love it! But, to be honest, I very much doubt alot of it will be saved. Apparently only 3 of these buildings are going to remain standing:

The people there just didn't seem to give a damn. ;)

They wont Bean, to them its a way to make money but i dont see how building houses will help, none of them are selling really ;) it should be saved for the future, not flattened.

Does look great.

Bean, can you sneak back & save these floor tiles for me? They'd be brilliant in my new bathroom! ;)

It's an amazing building & a shame to be demolished, but I bet its history is also full of sadness & despair. It might be kind of cathartic to start again? :xxx: Oh dear, I've woken up as a hippy this morning. Sorry.

The whole area would work so well if it was made into a community site. So, museum, craft workshops, corporate venue for hire etc etc. There's a church which is stunning, a great hall, which is one of the ones that's going to be saved, but whether it'll still look like this, is anyone's guess :

(not my photo - i wasn't allowed in)

Juju ... I do know what you mean. It is quite an eerie place in some bits. There's things just left in the buildings! And there's a load of crows living above the mortuary ...

But even so. ;)

That area and the buildings look amazing, so much detail in places like that and theres always a strange mystery in Asylums. Such a shame to knock it all down for new horrid looking houses .

Good photo's Bean.!

Cant see the pictures at work, but sounds good.

Me and tuktuk explorered a derelict hospital / mental asylum near us recently. We got inside (without breaking and entering.) and got loads of cool photographs including the dentist chair and the morgue/chapel. We spent a good 5hrs exploring the buildings, it was really cool. Havent posted the pictures on 28dayslater yet, but will do soon.

Ill add some pics tonight so you can see.
