Hi, when I first pull away and then each time i change gear there is a very clear knock coming from under the bonnet and the car judders, sounds as though the engine is moving and hitting something? I first thought it could be engine mounts, but if i try and move it by hand it still seems very stiff and when revved in neutral it hardly moves. I am now wondering if it could be subframe mounts?? Oh and its a 1993 if that makes any difference?

The mini is used daily and I don't really want the engine to drop out onto the road!!

It could be your Subframe mounts its worth a look at them.

Beat me to it.
This is a picture of some new ones just installed (never mind all the oil, that's a different problem - ahem!).
You're looking at the top engine steady bar ending with the purple plastic bushes:



If they look perished and flattened, then they'll need changing.
They always go because they get so hot near the engine block.

You can also change the bushes on the other end of the bar if they are bad too (less of a problem).
These back ones can be tricky to get to depending on the engine - yours, being a '93 like mine, will have all the brake and clutch gubbins in the way to make it a bit harder.

There is also a steady bar at the bottom of the gearbox which joins the front subframe.
You'd need to remove the grill to get to it (two mins and a screwdriver).

Beat me to it aswell, just going to replace mine this week as i have the exact same trouble as you are, luckily its during my resto anyway so no big deal, not too expensive but damn fidly!

id say start with replacing all the mounting rubbers, but its worth using competition ones, they are near enough the same price
