Engine cuts out whilst driving. complete power loss effective immediately. Engine block, radiator and hoses almost too hot to touch.
Engine recently serviced, fuel air mix sorted, thermostat changed and new spark plugs fitted.
Could this be an overheating or fuel pump problem?
Please help.

You say new plugs have been fitted but has any of the other elecrical side of the engine been replaced? I.E points, condensor, HT leads, coil?

Hi paulWhats the temp gauge like?, the engine and coolent hoses will be hot to touch once up to temp, but if the gauge reads normal then its fine.

Paul.
It was just the spark plugs that were changed, no other electrical parts (the water pump has been replaced as well)
The temperature guage says that the car is at the right temp. When the car cuts out, if left for an hour the car will start up as normal.
Hopes this helps.

When you say the fueling was sorted, was it tuned at operating temp? was it rolling roaded or done on a gas analyiser?
Could be fuel evaporation due to the heat off the engine?
Paul.

Normal operating temperature for the engine is in the region of 80 to 90 celcius, don't try to touch it.

The car was done on a gas analyser. It was tuned at operating temperature.

Does this all happen suddenly or does it get slowly worse until it stops? A sudden and complete failure points to the ignition rather than the fuel system or carb tuning. I'd look for wiring faults that are earthing the ignition.

It happens suddenly and without warning. But immediatly after the engine turns over but doesn't fire.

check the coil connections, we have been caught out with this before. worth a look.
Hi
thank you for the help, just thought i would let you know that i changed the coil and i haven't had the problem again, but i will have to wait and see, the car now runs a lot better.
thanks

I was on the H2H run and the car cut out again even with the new coil. We looked at the car as it cut out in the car park, and we found that the problem was actually the fuel filler cap. the cap was creating a vacuum so no fuel was getting to the engine. we took the rubber seal off the filler cap and everything was fine. Just thought i let you know.

Don't tanks have breather pipes to help prevent this?
Yeah they should, also it could mean your tank would fold in on itself, I would check the condition of your breather as well, then fuel wont come out the neck going around corners fast with a full tank.
