What rocker cover have you got? It's possible the rockers are touching in their extended arc.

Try one of the big square rocker covers from minispares or similar.

Quite a common problem. Standard steel ones should clear and MG metro ones too. I have to tap mine back slightly once it's nipped up to allow it to clear.

hm strange the engine is a longman 1380, and still has the longman ali cover on,,and also when the engine was first made (6 years ago ) up it had a 1.5 setup fitted in it . it was only the last owner that swapped over to 1.3 ....and i guess i will look at removing some of the inside of the cover later just to see if that helps...

I had the same problem, with my Titan 1.5 rockers. The rear end of the arm just below the adjuster nut was hitting the inside of the cover when the valves were shut. Even with the MG metro cover.

I tried to grind the inside of the cover, which probably would have worked but it took ages as I couldnt buy any alloy grinding Burrs locally. So in the end I gave up and bought the pukka Minispares rocker cover which allows clearance. It wasnt cheap, but beter to spend £50 and be happy that the rockers have proper clearance.

I guess its up to you, whether you want to mod the existing cover.

ok i have removed some of the inside of the cover.. what a diiferance...sounds like a petrol engine not a desil...ok last question ..if this had been going on for a while what damage could of been done ...it was the springs of both ends hitting inside of cover..

You mean the exhaust valve springs on 1 & 4? I doubt it would have much effect as the springs themselves provide the force. Squishing them sideways might cause uneven wear on the valve stems and if the spring travel was stopped short the rockers and tappets could get a bit of a hammering. I'd imagine the inside of the rocker cover would show the most signs of damage if that was going on.
