Mini Cooper 1994 Japanese version

The exhaust tail pipe hits the rear subframe (see picture). The two box silencer system seems to be original since it appears to have the port (unique to Japanese cars) for the cat overtemp sensor. The wires are gone for this function. However, there is no cat, so is not standard. Instead, there is a single long piece of pipe welded to the flex joint in the front going all the way back to the standard two bolt flange where the two silencers connect. The pipe has the right bends to clear the shifter mechanism under the floor. In my view, this pipe is too long by at least an inch. This condition is forcing the two silencer(s) rubber hangers to swing back too far as shown on the picture causing the tailpipe to move up and hit the underside of the frame. It also bows the pipe sideways in the central tunnel contacting the floor with the two bolt flange.
My plan is to first replace the bushings on the two steady bars to make sure that is not part of the problem. Next, I will disconnect the two bolt flange for the silencers. Allow the silencers to hang vertically on the rubber hangers and determine how much to cut of the pipe. Then, I will cut the long pipe in front of the flange. After the pipe is cut, rejoin it with a pipe connector and two u-bolt type clamps to avoid welding.
Does this make sense, or am I missing something? What do you guys think?

I might be wrong ( awaits correction ) but that all looks upside down?? >_< shouldnt the exhaust hang down off the rubber and not be 'supported' off the rubber ?

your plan of attack seems the right way to go >_<

Thanks for the reply, roofless. It looks strange on the picture but the exhaust is connected to the bottom of the rubber. The metal hanger goes through some contorsions to get there. Well, I feel better that the plan makes sense, thanks. :dozing:
