It never ceases to amaze me the difference in BHP the various a-series engines make in this section of the mag.

Looking back through to May 08 there is a 1275cc, 1.3.1 cast rockers, twin HS4 SU's Aldon igntion, lcb, playmini and 'lumpy cams.

How did that make 98.6bhp?!!!

Well if it's got 'cams' (plural) then it must be something special! ;)

to be honest though, it's all about the head and the cams, so if he's got a 300 degree cam in there and a massively ported head, that kinda figure's possible.

But I do agree that some of the figures in there seem a little OTT sometimes.

It also amazes me how often plain standard 998 engines beat a 998 with a stage one kit!!

Yes I was amazed and a bit miffed how my 1990 Mainstream Mini Cooper only managed something like 1.5bhp more than my mates near identical (but bog standard and still retaining it's cat) Mainstream Mini Cooper.

Yet mine has a Maniflow LCB and 1" 3/4 twin box exhaust system, plus a K&N cone filter and a slightly richer needle.

So de-catting a carb Mini to gain better performance must surely be all a myth?

Either way it was a fantastic day with members of all ages enjoying themselves and there was a good mix of cars from bog standard 998cc right up to a Vauxhall engined Mini which managed close on 100bhp. Although a Mini with a modded A series engine achieved more and got over 100bhp.

It's just a real shame that neither Mini World or Mini Magazine showed much interest and we've only been promised a passing mention on one page if that.

Here's some of the photographs that I took on this thread anyway: -
