I'd remove the plug, especially on a Mini. You want the heavy debris, sitting at the bottom, out.

if you want to ruin your engine then use a flush !!

if it's noisy then it needs a re build.

most well mad engine are worth using engine flush when doing an oil change i have myslef for many years used engine flush as it removes all the crap and deposites from the engine and ensure the engine is clean for the new oil

many argue the detergents cause black death by lifiting crap off the sump base and and block the oil galleries

i myself have never had a problem and i normally do this when i first get a car

although with my mini currently leaking oil and the fact the engines bore is very worn i havent bothered as i do an oil change every month

when i rebuild my engine ill probs run 10w60 full synth

i have used engine slick 50 on my old saxo engine and it made it run alot quieter and sweater

so id use slick 50 engine treatment myslef but up to you if you change the oil often enough i wouldnt bother

I wouldnt use synthetic oil in a mini engine.

20w50 mineral oil is about right for an a series.

my engines good just slightly noisy its done 43000 miles

Could be noisy tappets/ignition timing slightly out.

a mate suggested molyslip will improve the quietness and protect engine and gearbox i went to motor factors who sell two one for engine one for gearbox so first question is which one and does it actualy work. also when i change my oil is it wise to use flush or should i just drain it and top it up. im worried if i flush it i will cause leaks etc

The key to a goob oil change is to get the engine/oil up to working temp, preferably by driving for it to circulate round the engine and pick up all the crap and then as soon as the engine is switched of the oil is dumped immediately while it’s still hot.

To minimise the time for the oil pressure to build up afterwards on initial start up, pre-fill the oil filter with fresh oil.

And providing you service the mini/change the oil regularly you shouldn’t get a build up of crap.

if you use teflon (sliick 50) in a mini you will wear your baulk rings at a very much increased rate, your cylinder walls will become glazed and loose compression, becuse the mini shares its oil with the engine and box, to flush an engine buy some cheap 20w50 and run it for a few days/week and drain.

The only thing you may want to consider is doing two changes, especially if it's really rough. Do an oil and filter change now, and then check the oil level and colour in a week or so, if it's still qutie dark consider changing again to get to nice clear oil, this will flush some of the remaining crud out of the system without getting carried away with random additives.

I always run on 20W50 in my mini's, Halfords do a rather attractive 'classic' oil, comes in a useful metal can too, brilliant for putting your old oil or other old fluids, (brake/clutch/etc) in to take to the tip afterwards.
