Hiya
I use a brilliant engine cleaner/degreaser from Lidl and it's only £1.49 a can. As soon as you spray it on, the grease comes off.

Tin of gunk and a stiff brush.
It wont come up gleaming but it will remove any dirt/oil. Then a lick of paint is needed.

i used a can of carb cleaner and some kitchen roll.
spray it on leave a few seconds then just wipe it off, it is back to yellow now and was the dirtiest engine i had ever seen.
it also saves having to use a pressure washer and gettign everythign in the engine bay soaking
