I have a 1984 austin mini mayfair with a 1275 a series engine with a standrad 2 core rad

the problem is whenever i stop the car after ive been drivin hard the rad cap releases and all the water goes into my expansion bottle

also whenever i go the motorway doing 80 the car gets HOT and i can gaurenty when i stop and let it cool the rad need about a 500ml to a litre of water

ive fitted a new rad cap and this is better but still using water i did have a rad leak and put some rad seal in which did indeed stop the leak but im unsure if it the thermostat or rad thats at issue with the engine using water seems like it gets too hot and the rad caps just saying ive had enough

head gaskets fine, water pumps fine

so im not sure if one the rad isnt cooling enough or 2 the thermostat crap and not working properly or 3 im being a retard and this is how mini rads are unless u fit a 3 or 4 core rad and a racing cap

Personally i'd stroll on down to Halfords and pick a stat up, theyre only about £4 so its not going to break the bank. I'd be tempted to pick another rad cap up as well, incase the over pressurising has caused it to fault.
If that fails, give your cooling system a clear out.
I had a cooling issue with my old 1098 and it turned out to be because of all the bar seal someone had put in.

A mate of mine had a similar problem when he fitted a 998 cooling system to a 1275 A+ w/o a water pump bypass ;D

The rad should be sufficient for an un- or mildly tuned 1275.

Did you do a pressure loss test?

Other thing I can imagine:
- air in system (had this once)
- stuck thermostate
- wrong ignition timing / lean mixture
- headgasket

if you fill it to the top there will always be a little amount going out of the overflow as the coolant expands.

Have you flushed the system out? try a new stat in it may not be opening properly. they don't cost alot.

Also check your fan is on the right way around, lot's of minis have this.

Are you using the right rad cap for an expansion bottle system?
