My install was definately inspired by the Bini


I don't think there's a definite awnser to that question. It's just a good place to have it SOMEWHERE behind the steeringwheel. It has been done before, it has been done after - but originaly: no. And never.
I believe the first Mini with a tacho fitted by the factory was the Clubman 1275GT with the 3 clock plastic cluster.

As far as i know it was never put there on a standard model but has been done for years on modified minis before the bini came along.

It was often done on the rally prepped minis of the 60's i believe (though not sat on the steering column):
