Bini-style Tacho Position

was the bini's position of the tacho (behind the steering wheel, on the column) inspired by an actual mini design? Were there any minis that had the tacho mounted there originally or perhaps it was done so on the racing versions?

My install was definately inspired by the Bini :D

I don't think there's a definite awnser to that question. It's just a good place to have it SOMEWHERE behind the steeringwheel. It has been done before, it has been done after - but originaly: no. And never.

I believe the first Mini with a tacho fitted by the factory was the Clubman 1275GT with the 3 clock plastic cluster.

As far as i know it was never put there on a standard model but has been done for years on modified minis before the bini came along.

It was often done on the rally prepped minis of the 60's i believe (though not sat on the steering column):
