Right. It's a standard 998cc. 1990. Single carb.

What I want to do is alter the air intake so that I can have a K & N filter sitting on top.

It isn't the one I want but it is similar. Is there any manifold sort of kits so that I am able to do this?

Thanks :D

The most common types of K&N are a round cone shaped one.

All you need to do is buy the correct filter, no other items are required. You'll have a carb with a 1.5" throat hole and so will want a filter with the same, offset hole.

Like this one from Mini spares Clicky...

Consider adding a StubStack to improve airflow further Clicky

Or you could do a search and consider simply replacing the element in your airbox for a K&N version and drilling some holes? As I say, research it.

This will make your mixture leaner however so adjustments will need to be made and you may need a new Carb Needle.

Why not go the whole hog and get a Stage 1 Kit and session on a rolling road :D, best way to spend £250 on a 998 imo!

You'd need to change the carb, a downdraught carbs what you want : 28/36DCD Weber, Nikki carb, IDA weber and there are several others from Weber that fit the bill.

Think he means like this? >_<

Alternatively you could maybe work off the original 'elbow' as a guide to get it extended somehow but not sure how you would secure it down.

The original airbox sits around the carb so not sure if you would have the space to mount the filter flat on top? Presuming your looking to keep your carb and not upgrading as above what Nightrain said?

Well obviously you can buy most of 'em new still, but I'd be looking around ebay and autojumbles etc. They where fitted to most fords depending on what type you fancy. I know loads of people who have fitted the 28/36 to there minis and not heard a bad word said against this carb. A more modern version is the 32/34DMTL, Weber actually suppled a conversion kit for the mini with this carb. These are both progressive twin choke carbs, in that they have a primary and secondary choke. At low throttle openings they only run on the primary choke giving you the economy of a single choke carb. The primary choke can be set up on the weak side to further increase economy. Then once the throttle is past two thirds open the secondary choke starts to open, giving you the performance of a twin choke carb.

Another option would be a proper twin choke carb ie. where both chokes open simultaneously. Something I've always fancied giving a go would be a Weber 40 DCNF from the MG Maestro which had 2 of these fitted. Or if your feeling flush a 46IDA would be the expensive option.
There are loads of webers possibilities, but they will need setting up properly !
