Hi
hope theres an easy answer to this? Im planning on taking the paint off the top of the radiator to reveal the brass but dont want to scrape it off or sand it off as i dont want to damage the brass plating ;)

I have some nitromors can i use that?
Will it just remove the thin layer of black paint and leave the brass in good order without actually damaging it or stripping the brass too?

If not anybody else stripped the paint on theirs and what did they use?

Hi there, Nitromors would be okay to get the paint lifted, but perhaps you could use a plastic scraper to scrape instead of the usual metal ones for obvious reasons. To get the remainder of the paint off, why not use some fine wire wool, folowed by polishing it up with some Autosol.
Hope that helps

are all radiators in brass? i was thinking about doing the same but was not sure if it was brass.

as for taking paint off it i think some paint remover and maybe a cloth would be enough

Does anyone know what the little brass wire clip is for that sits inside one of the little slots inside the rad below the filler cap? I tugged on it and it came out then I got a bit worried so I put it back into the little slot it sits in?!?

The little pin you describe is a water level indicator - always fill the rad up level with the pin.

Jodie - Nitormors will be fine, put plenty on and then wipe it away with a brush and cloth, wipe down thoroughly with thinners and then get the brasso out ;)

some fine wire wool might be needed too :)

Not all radiators are metal/brass; some have moulded, ribbed plastic tops, normally the latter minis or ones that have later been replaced...
This is what the brass flat toped ones look like; if it has moulded ribs then it’s most probably a plastic one.

The paint on the brass toped radiators is only thin anyway and I’ve only ever had to use some light sandpaper and metal polish

so if it's not plastic it is brass? not steel or something like that. actually it would be a bad idea to make it out of steel

There is several ways to strip the paint off the top of the radiator, Nitromors will work ok also wet dry paper & some wire wool, then polish up with autosol. Just be careful using nitromors as if radiator is in car it will take the paint off anything it lands on.
