Model:Rover Mini Cooper 1.3i
Year:1994
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

Ok Mini i am looking at has the following problem is this big or small to fix by someone???

The engine is smoky. It was handed in to a garage to be checked. The report back was that:- The compressions are high and equal (175 PSI). The emissions indicated heavy overfuelling. The engine makes no abnormal noises.

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?

Heavy overfuelling.

Would suggest an issue with one of the sensors as it's an MPi.
Maybe better in the injection forum, so have moved this there and left a link.

1994 should be an SPi fuel injected model. There is a very good troubleshooting guide pinned at the top of the forum. There are many simple things that can be checked that could resolve the problem.

The desciption smoky needs some additional info. Smoky at only certain times, color of smoke, etc. Did the garage use a diagnostic tool on the car?

as stated go to the injection section:
get a haynes manual and check/re-new the following

1:check all plastic capillery tubes for splits/damage ( coloured red, yellow and black ),especially the black pipe, make sure it has not been seperated from the ecu
2:get a fluke meter and check the readings from the lambda sensor, the air temp sensor and the water temp sensor,if dodgy readings replace,if only to rule these components out
3:make sure your air filter is clean or new
4:check for exhaust leaks forward of the lambda sensor ( all pipes, around manifold and gasket areas )
i had this problem on my spi,it was overfueling big time, and after checking everything above,it still is,best to look in sprockets spi/mpi problem solving section in the first instance, the haynes manual will help you to identifty components
