Yes you can, for safety, disconnect the battery first, and make it safe, then remove the spare wheel, and place some newspaper down incase you do get a leak.
Now completely undo the bolt that secures the strap, it takes ages, but persevere and remove it, now push the strap back, and wiggle the tanke a bit.
Next you should go under the car and push a few inches of fuel hose and breather hose up through the floor. Then undo the fuel cap, move the tank and replace the fuel cap on the fuel neck inside the boot asap.
Carefully lift and move the tank, being careful of the hose, you can twist the front, (side nearest you) to turn the tank sideways against the bulkhead, and rest the tank in the spare wheel well. Now remove shock, replace, etc, and put back together.
Once back together check for fuel leaks, the hoses do split quite easily, (and for this reason you should only try this with the tank relatively empty, but not completely empty otherwise you'll never know).

Have a look at the connections on the top of the tank before moving it, but as long as you're careful there shouldn't be too much of a problem with moving it enough to get to the shock top mount.

The advice that Dave has given above is 100% correct for a car fitted with a carb, but you say yours is an SPi, so just to add a couple of additional things, you will need to be careful as your car has two fuel pipes, a fuel feed and a fuel return, and there will also be an electrical plug on the top of the tank which is for the in-tank fuel pump.
Have a look at the connections on the top of the tank before moving it, but as long as you're careful there shouldn't be too much of a problem with moving it enough to get to the shock top mount.
Thanks for correcting me, my fault for not reading the first post fully.

Top man Dave...Purple Tom
thank you really..
Great info
Just to add - I have a 95 SPi - if it is the same as a 92 the pipes are all solid that travel through the boot floor to the underside of the car, so you wont need to push through any slack from underneath. They are secured to the back seat panel. The sections of flexi pipe running from them to the tank should have enough slack in them to let you move the tank a bit.
To be honest, if you can be bothered syphoning out the fuel, it's just about as quick to just remove the tank completely.
Cheers
