I have an alpine variant in my van - superb bass and the remote gain is excellent, but they dont give you same deep bass as a full blown boxed bass driver connected to a more capable amplifier.

it extremely effective though and certainly a space saver.

For space and easy to fit, i would say a built in amp is better. But personally i prefer the seperate amp, you can run more off it later without a new sub then, and also you can tweak the sub a lot better.

My opinion

sorry, cant really guage - I've never heard the kenwood. :D The first time we used one of these alpines was in a new civic with a very similar kenwood to your head-unit at the front end - it was superb and really changed my opinion on this type of product - so much so I got one for the van. :)

At present, I don't have a sub in my Mini. I do, however, have two Vibe active subs in my Escort; I know these are far too big to fit under the seat in a Mini, and the fact that they are self-contained means that I can remove them in seconds, as I've wired an in-line connector for the power leads. This means it's not a huge operation if I need to remove them for luggage space etc.
