Hey all,

My cousin ( 15 year old and wants to be a mechanic ) has had a reliant Robin for about a month for him to mess around with until he's 16 and can drive it..

However, he's just got his hands on an old Mini Van Shell and a Fibre Glass Mini Flip Front, and is planning on using them to re-shell the reliant to have a " 3 Wheeled Mini Van ". He has it all planned ready to start.

He saw the attached picture and thought it looked a bit similar to a mini.... so is going to give it a go.

Will keep you informed of his progress.

Matt

I thought you could if it was a three wheeler with the reverse blocked off. Am I wrong?

Please read above.

I believe about 25years ago, if you held a motorbike license you could drive certain 3 wheelers depending on weight if they did not have a operational/fitted reverse gear. It was classed as a 3 wheeled motorcycle.

There is no provision for this these days, so you need the category B1 on your license, which is achieved by passing the driving test at the minimum age of 17 years old.

More info can be seen on the DVLA's website.

I am well passed 16 and hold a full license so it matters not to me. And it seems I am living a bit in the past as well LOL

Still I stand corrected! Thank you

No worries.

Stops the rumours going round too. Straight from the DVLA website, so im afraid any 16yr olds reading, you still have a year to go....or stick to the mopeds.

According to my cousin, he asked the DVLA and he can drive in on a Learner Motorcycle License as long as he removes the passenger seats ?!?! as on a learner licence he cannot ride with anyone as a passenger.

If he passes the first certificate he can then drive it no worries. If he does the modifications, he can still drive it as long as it remains less that 550kg ( The law on the Reliant Robin is its in the class of " "Motor tricycles / quadricycles, 3 or 4 wheeled vehicles with an unladen weight not exceeding 550kg." )

The only problem he has is insurance, but has found three firms so far confirming that they will insure him.

He even checked with the police and got advised that due to the class of vehicle, if it is insured, Mot'd and taxed and he has the correct class of licence he is fine ?!?

I know he got a letter off the DVLA, I will find out what exactly they said and let you know.

I think hes wrong personally.

But I will wait to be corrected. The DVLA is full of weird things like towing with trailers etc, but it is explained on the website. I think something like this would be explained on the website.

It clearly states that any 3 or 4 wheeled car with a unladen not exceeding 550kg is classed as a LIGHT VEHICLE. it does not say motorcycle/moped/bike/tricycle etc.

Anything above this is classed as a "vehicle". Which is the B license.

If you could still drive them at 16, there would be loads about, ebay prices would be twice as high as they are and college carparks full of them.....but they aint.

A 16 year old isnt aloud anything bigger that a 50cc engine. So if you put a 50cc engine in their then he can drive it but it wont go anywhere. I would have loved to have had a Peel P 50 when I was 16 to drive around in.

What?

A 50cc MOTORCYCLE OR MOPED (with the relevant license and training qualifications)

A three wheeler is classed as a LIGHT VEHICLE/CAR so even with a 50cc engine, you require a CAR license to drive. (B and B1)

Jeeez louise....
