I have a 1989 mini 1000 that had a stage 1 kit on it when I got it. It was running a went like a rocket but since the car has just gone back on the road after 14 months and everything stripped cleaned, painted etc it doesnt seem to have the go. I fitted a pipercross sponge air filter and have been told that this is my problem as they are equivalent to running with no air filter at all. Was just wondering if this is correct. The car does not run rich but is very heavy on petrol, and I changed the needle for an AAU which is for a stage 1 mini 1000 with a head as I am running a 12g295. Am I best of to get a K&N pancake filter( I think the filter element is a blue colour Or just stick with what I have got. Many thanks.

What was fitted before the pipercross filter? It could be that this has leaned out the mixture and you need to richen it up again/swap needles.

Get a K&N replacement filter (one that fits in the airbox), check your points, and possibly get to a rolling road.

The mixture is right as the plugs are light brown/tan. But the carb has been tweaked to allow alot more fuel through to cope with the loads more air that this filter is letting through. I think an air filter that is abit more restrictive would be better maybe.
