bassicly ive got some four point harness and and some bucket seats with the harness holes in the top.
i wont to keep my back seats ( and so people can sit on them, soooo.. i want to weld a square plate of steel with a hole in it, to the bottom of the seat subframe for the harness to bolt to.

Posted Image

ok so as you can see im *melon* at paint lol but u get my idea. the harness should move forward when u tilt the seat forward to let people in the back.

but would the plates and subfame be strong enough to take the force of a crash. i carnt think of anything else to ask

thanks steve x

I was hoping the only flaw was in your title. :)

There's no way you should carry out your plans as above. There is a set range of angles that harnesses should be mounted at and vertically down is not one of them.

AFAIK there is no safe way of using harnesses and having passengers in the back.

This has also been discussed a lot on this forum so a quick search should probably tell you all you need :)

Check the end of this FAQ for some guide to how harnesses should be fitted.

Harnesses must be mounted pretty carefully for them to help save you in a crash...otherwise they can just make matters far worse!

Nice idea, but i doubt it'd be very safe, even if done properly.

What i would suggest is, having reinforced (i mean seriously reinforced, you put 2 tonnes of force on a belt/harness in a crash) plates in the floor for the harness to bolt to. Then buying harnesses which either use quick release clips so they can easily be unclipped for tilting the seats, or a harness like the one I have like below:

So then you leave the back part bolted in and just undo the belt clip to tilt the seat.

Although i must say, i don't think its a very good idea. You must be sure you are a very good welder and can make perfect, strong welds. I'd also make any mount you come up with twice as beefy as you think it needs to be.

i like that idea but i see 1 downside i have holes in the top of the seat but how would i get the harness through And are you certain that is safe as everyone else says they have to horizontal

ahh forgot about your seats. Don't think that type of harness would work.

In my opinion, anything that involves making your own harness mountings isn't really safe.

I had the same dilema but decided that a normal harness, bolted to the rear seatbelt mounts was alrite. I can still carry two passengers. It depends how often you have you car full of people.

You'd undo the lap buckle and pass each end that mounts to the floor through the back of the seats :)

this diagram helps allot:

Shows you the correct angles for the moutings, but as you can see there is some leaniency, on that rear strap.

But there isnt really any way in which you could have rear passengers with full harness's

I am planning to leave my passenger seat with a standerd belt, this is so i can carry atleast 2 extra passengers, because this leaves half the rear seat useable.

If you just want it to have mroe controll whilst driving have you looked at the CG lock? HERE

I have tried one of these, and they are exelent, and also allow you the upper body movement as normal to reach the switches.

ok thanks guys if i got the quick release harnesses and mounted them to the front of the rear sear i would have to re-enforce it quite alot but would it be ok so the passengers in the back put them between there legs?

you have no idea how much your goign to have to reinforce it to get that to pass an mot, the guide lines are there for a reason. if you want harness then you lose your back seats. you have to makle the tuf choice.

as if you gte it wrong in a crash it could do more damage tyan you can imagine as if the seats can still tilt whats to say the locking bit on teh seat fails and snaps there is nothign thent o stop tehs eat flying in to your window screen.

ok well im going back to my first idea then. ill leave the normall seat belts in asswell as harness and just use them when i dont have passengers. then i will bolt the harnes to the regular back seat bolts. then when i ahve passengers they can just move them to the side or sit on them then ill use the reular seatbelt :w00t:

go on!................................... sum1 find something wrong with that one of u will lol
