hi, i have seen oil cooper kits for mpi minis for sale. can you get just the filter spacer on its own, or use one adapted from another model of car.

The oil temp rises (not dangerously) after iv give the car a good run then leave it standing on tickover. will be tuning the engine soon, and would like to fit an oil cooler.

thanks

Can you post up the link as I am thinking about an Oil Cooler for my MPi? It gets up a bit high (120-130 DegC) when on a long run and high(ish) ambient!!! Would be looking for one with a Thermostat if possible?

Minisport sell an oil cooler kit for the MPi and it uses a stubby oil filter that is a common part on many Renault engines right across the rage and age. However, it must be a custom made thread adapter as the Mocal sandwich plate kit on its own that fits the MPi block and all Rover K series engines, is the same thread on either end of the adapter. Basicaly the stubby filter will not fit on MPi thread and the Stanadard MPi oil filter will not fit on the Minisort oil cooler kit thread adapter.

are these any good? or just cheap crap? if they can get the thread for sandwich to block, can fit any oil filter onto the other end

Read carefully what I said above :) I am not sure if you can get a full size standard filter in with a sandwich plate in an MPi engine bay?

The Minisport kit is a Mocal sandwich plate with a special threaded adapter to take the stubby filters.

I seem to remember reading somewhere (and am prepared to be corrected) that fitting an oil cooler to a standard engine or even one in a mild state of tune was not entirely necessary and could even do more harm than good.

If there is already an issue with the oil temperature being too 'high', would this not just be masking a problem that could be made worse after the engine has some performance bits added......?

mine doesnt rise unless its had a good run and is then left to idle. fitted with a thermostat no damage sould be done.

I can't find the post, but i too remember reading a post about why you shouldn't need to an oil cooler to a standard / mildly mod'd engine....i seem to remember the argument being that if the oil is "cooled" too much then the oil won't protect the engine correctly.

Personally unless you rag the nuts off your mini round a track for hours on end then you shouldn't really need one as its surprising just how effective the cooling fins are on the bottom of the gearbox lol
