Hi, i just recieved two of these carbs in a bunch of spares given to me by a friend, thinking that they might be of use.

Thing is, they look unlike any carb i've seen on here...

Can anyone help identify them, please? They came off an MG of some sort, i think.

HIF carb fitted to late mini's and metro's (before injection)

could be a 38 or a 44 you will need to measure the round hole

It's an SU HIF (internal float) carb. However - something i have not seen on an HIF is the 2 stud attachment - usually the HIF's have a 4 stud flange that attaches to the manifold - this seems to have the 2-stud flange seen on the SU HS (side float) carbs. Definately not off a Mini in my opinon....

I guess it would really help finding out what vehicle they came off - check all the components for part numbers (might be one on the bottom of the carb) and then do a search on this site:

www.sucarb.co.uk

you can tailor the search to your needs- so just putting in a part number has the ability to bring up the source vehicle etc...

Just did a search on the site that Retro10s posted, and apparently they're a variation of the HIF 4...

Linky

Yeah, they've got links and such to link the two, and it looks like one of them will bolt straight onto the manifold. Is this carb suitable for a 998 mini?

Or, if i were to get hold of the manifold for the both of them, would that bolt straight onto the Mini head??

Apologies if any of this is common knowledge, rather new to these old british cars.

Edit: Cheers Nightrain, spot on ;)

Hi Andy - glad that link helped.

If you had the Appropriate manifold and linkages then yes they would work on a mini - however - how well they'd work i'm not sure - On a 998 they could be set up to 'function' with the right needles and careful mixture set-up - but be likely to Be far far too large unless it was a seriously worked head, block and Cam... even then i believe it would most likely give no more benefit than a single HIF44. but would it look cool? yes! and would it sound good? yes! Bulkhead clearance may also be an issue - but pancake filters could help sort this out....

In my opinion these are much more suited to the large bore motor that's had some considerable work done - especially when you look at the spec/type of the engine that they were originally fitted to.

Unfortunatley i can only give this advice as speculation knowing what happens when you 'over carb' an engine - i have no actual experience fitting large twins onto small bore motors.

Brilliant, cheers!

I'll try one on there as soon as i've got it cleaned up/rebuilt enough for service, and as soon as the engines ready for it (timing's waaaay out as it is).

Might try getting hold of all the necessary manifoldage and linkages needed at some point, but that'll be off in the future and purely for the cool factor ;]

Thanks for your help guys! =D

Cheers, Paul.
