If the fan only comes on when its up to temp then its fine, its when it comes on from cold, after switching the engine off they do carry on for a few minutes (so does nearly all electric cooling fans in cars).

But surely the electric cooling fan isn't required when you're belting along? Yes it is different if you're stuck in traffic on a hot day though.

Either way, that Rover Tech Bulletin I provided has been relevant to many an MPi Mini owner.

you could try reseting your ecu its done by having the ignition in position 2 and pressing the accelerator pedal down to the floor and up again 10 times then turn the ignition off and on again

Isn't that a myth, Chris?

Check the temperature sender in the Thermostat housing sandwich plate. I had similar problem with the fan always running, when engine fired up. Ordered a new one and now it runs on and off as required. Unfortunately the temp gauge never gets above normal! Think a new gauge is in order :goaway:

Hi,

I'm getting this on a newly purchased 1999 Mini, 1275 engine. I'm sure it's developed over the last few days, as I didn't really notice the fan being on when I just picked it up, but now it seems to be on all the time! Strangely, engine temperature seems absolutely spot on. It's not running too cold, sits nicely in the middle most of the time, so I'm not sure if it just gets hot, but it seems odd the fan is *always* running. Suggestions above would indicate this is probably not right.

Anyone got that PDF linked to above? Link seems to be dead now...

Cheers,

Greg

The easiest thing to try first is to spray some WD40 on the sensor connection at the thermostat. The same problem occurred on my 1997 mini and I was shown this trick by a mini specialist. It cured the problem and has been trouble free for nearly three years.
I do not think the pdf is relevant. The tech bulletin was to do with an early (1996) problem which would not apply to your 1999 mini.

Ahh, ok ... and if that fails, maybe start thinking about replacing relevant sensors, I guess? Must buy Haynes manual ASAP!
