Rear Subframe Assembly Order...

When ready to re-install the rear subframe after it's been off the car is it best to assemble the rear subframe off the car and then fix it back on, or fit the bare subframe first and then add the subframe parts such as suspension/brakes etc??

build it up first, it's alot easier, It's upto you though. I just couldn't be bothered messing about under the car with the brake pipes etc

I'm going to go the opposite and say that you should fit the mounts and then fit the bare frame to the car, fitting all the other bits to it once on - the reason is that it's much lighter and easier to get it into the right position to get the mounting bolts lined up without the heavy lumps of cast iron attached.

well i've always but the brake lines and exhaust mounts on off the car, then fitted the frame and put the radius arms and suspension in last, but then thats when i've been working on my own.
i can see the advantages of fully fitting everything before the frame goes on the car but only if you have some help when it comes to getting it in place.
they are very heavy with ALL the bits in place

I've done mine recently and made the mistake of fitting all the bits whilst the subframe was off the car. This was very heavy and awkward, and hence difficult to line up. When i have to do it again i will definately just fit the subframe by itself and then the radius arms once the frame is on the car. Good luck

thanks chaps! - one more question i cant find the answer to ... what sort of torque do the 4 large bolts that go through the rubber mounts on the rear subframe need to be? - I'm guessing not very tight or they will compress the rubber too much??

Build it up off the car. Then put a long piece of wood and a jack under it. The jack can then be used to raise it into position, and hold it there while you attach it to the car.

Ive done it both ways, and decided its much easier building it up on the car. I dont mind messing about under the car getting covered in muck though.

I build mine up first, then have a jack under each side to raise and manouvere into position, fit the front bolts loose, then the tops, and then tighten everything. Just my preferred method, but I can see why people fit it bare, then put radius arms in afterwards.
