Hi all
my mate bought a 1998 Cooper sports pack yesterday after wanting one for over 2 years, I drove it home from Cardiff to Oxford with no bother (well apart from needing to re adjust my major organs!)

Anyway he drove off in it and did about 20 miles and it died, I ended up going out to him and towing it back, did the usual checks and found the fuel pump fuse had blown, put in another cranked it and that blew (the fuel pump was making a heck of a racket all the way home, it was very loud inside the car, at first I thought it was interference on the stereo)

It is now at my house and I have checked for obvious loose connections etc, cleaned and re seated most multiplugs, cleaned ECU earth wire, got it running but it sounds like a dumper truck!, but the fuel pump is running (put a 20amp fuse in just for testing) and more of a buzzing sound now like it should be?

One other strange thing is the fan seems to be coming on intermittently, I thought it funny when they took it up the road and it was still on when the engine was switched off, again today it came on when cold! could the temp sensor cause this? and is there a resistor I could put in the multiplug to simulate it working correctly? (although why would the pump relay blow if it was this?)

Any help in getting it running again and off my drive very much appreciated!

Im no MPi expert, but if the fuel pump was making a load of noise, it needs replacing/fixing... maybe a new pump would stop the fuse blowing?

Well I think it was making a load of noise, not sure as I have never driven an mpi before, but I need to diagnose if it is deffo the pump because at £240 for a new one I will be most unpopular if it is some thing else!

Injection fuel pumps make a high pitched whine during running, this is normal, anything different then its not right.

Might need putting on diagnostics to find the fault, you dont know what the previous owner has done in terms of fettling.

Also when going over large bumps you can trip the interia switch in the engine bay which cuts of the fuel pump, to reset it you need to press the button in the middle of it. Its located in the upper right hand corner of the engine bay, its like a massive button.

Yeah checked the inertia switch, the pump is now making a high pitch whine but was making a much louder noise on the way back, over 100 miles at 80+ all the way so was at least delivering fuel!

Where is the diagnostic plug and does it have to be a specialist ecu reader or can it display codes by bridging pins like on other cars?

Well bit of an update, my mate called out the RAC who came out and checked a few things, he said the fuel pump is working ok (he didn't do a diagnostic on the ecu though) as are the injectors etc

He then pulled off each ht lead in turn when running and found that 1 and 4 are making no difference when disconnected, thing is there is a spark on all 4 cylinders though, so off to the scrap yard and picked up a spare coil pack (by the way Rover 800, Vauxhall Cavalier and some Vectra's are the same)

Fitted but no difference!, tried some different ht leads on 1 and 4 but again no change

Would this Be better in the Injection Specific Section?
might get more interest?

Just been out on it again and replaced the cam sensor, still wont start properly, runs very lumpy for a few secs then dies, tipped a bit of fuel down the throttle body and it runs fine and even revs till it's out of fuel

Something is out, timing? what would cause this?

It's had new fuel filter, coil pack, crank sensor, temp sensor, leads and plugs, full check with ACR4 diagnostics, fuel getting to right side of injectors and getting a spark!

Maybe not all at the right time though :turtle:
