Please give your topic a title that quickly describes your problem. Just putting 'Help my Mini doesn't work' is useless to anyone trying to help.

The gearbox only started whining after a few months and it is leaking oil by the selecter shaft i have double seals there as per the manuel but she is still leaking and the gearbox is for a 1275
Also i want to have the box redone what do you guys think about strait cut gears do i have to buy them or can the current box be modified

4 speed Straight cut gears etc are all designed to be direct replacements for the std helical gearsets.

Straight cut gears make a good Mini better to drive take less power to drive them, therefore more to the wheels

They do whine in 1st, 2nd & 3rd, but as 4th is direct drive the whine almost disappears, I have the full set in my 1996 Cooper 1330 and in my 1380 Turbo

I wouldn't want to be without them, but some people say they are too noisy

I had a guy redo the box for me changed the rolos gears from the plastic casing to the metal casing once so could that also be why the gears are whining
And i am really considering going for straight cut gears and changing the raitio on the box but not sure what will be the best at the moment i get 140 km/h at 5000rpm and would like to get a better top speed
also i have a vibration on the engin on low speed but as soon as i get over 120 km /h then the vibration goes away is this also because of the gear box

http://www.guess-wor...nical/ratio.htm
Top speed is largely dependant on BHP and where it is in the rev range, ie. a turbo will generally max out at about 5500 where by a naturally aspirated engine could go on a lot further dependant on cam etc...
Vibration, is more likely to be caused by driveshaft/s being bent, wheel bearings failing, out of balance wheels and tyres (don't believe tyre companies when they say it's spot on ! there is ALWAYS a tolerance of xxx grams which could be 150g, as is standard in some tyre companies) or inner CV pot joints and side cover bush wear causing excessive movement....

think it might be the driveshafts as the car also feels like it bounches so i will get started on the box and my straight cut gears and then will replace the driveshafts and bearings
thanks for the advice

Really I haven't used 20/50 for about 25 years, a good 10W40 is ideal, it will also give you slightly better fuel economy, and look up what oil Rover recomended for the Metro....

So you can use whatever oil you like, but my Mini has never run so well since I switched over to using 'Duckhams Q Classic 20W/50' a few years back.
Either way, it's the Mini owners who use the classic oil whose Minis go the distance as it's very good for the Minis engine and gearbox/baulk rings.
10W/40 is just too thin and sythetic oil is also a big no no.

That's why my 1380 Turbo did well over 80,000 miles on 10W40

However at the end of the day it's your choice, and I wasn't actually mocking you for it, honest

To be honest, I only used 10/40 for years as it was the recommended oil.
But mine just seems to run much better on the classic oil and I've heard stories of Minis virtually going around the clock twice on nothing but classic oil and regular oil changes, before requiring any work.

will have a look at 20 w 50 i also live in South Africa so the weather here is quite warmer than in the uk will thiker oil help to stop the leaking on the selector shaft?
i am running double oil seals there and they are still leaking was thinking of putting motor bike oil in my car. Seeing that the gearbox and engine is also using the same oil and the motor bike oil has a special lubrication for high rev motors and gearboxes.

The mechanics around here say that top speed comes from the diff not the gearbox
does not sound right to me at all but they keep on arguing with me
