hi I had an air leak from my carb and I test it with wd40 and the car didn't speed up. and the air leak was that bad it whistled. and a nabour of mine come over and suggested taking the carb off and put sealer between each gasket. I only done it really to houmer him as I had already done the wd40 trick, and it work and solved my problem to my surprise

Well mine did. But really rough, lumpy and back firing. You couldn't drive it, but it confused me for a while.

Backfiring through the carb is caused by underfuelling or incorrect timing (usually along with a smattering of incorrect fuel mixture)

Did you re-set the carb? have you set the static timing correctly?

i have messed around with the carb now yes.

the procedure i did to do my timing was remove the vac advance pipe then set the timing light to 6 degrees BTDC and i then timed the groove on the pulley to the biggest pointer on the timing case. is this the way to do it?

Since the car idles well and you feel you have the mixture set correctly, look for problems with fuel delivery. Look at both the float level in the bowl and the delivery rate from the pump. As Retro10s said, backfiring out the carb when the ignition is set correctly is an indication of fuel starvation.
