There is no proper earth connection on Mk1 lamps. Make up lengths of wire with ring terminals which will fasten under one of the 3 mounting nuts on each lamp. Bring both wires to the bolt in the lower tank mounting strap and attach with another ring terminal, or any other handy bolt with a good earth. As above I'm sure this will cure your problem.

Tommy beat me to what I was going to post. Add additional earth wires and all should be well.

I thought about these for mine too, however the stop/tail bulbs on the Mk1 lamps fit deep in a recess which is 33mm diameter. You will have to check the bulb dimensions to see if they will fit. If you replace the flasher bulbs you will have to use resistors in series with them or a special electronic flasher unit. For best light intensity it used to be advised to use red led bulbs in the stop/tail and amber in the flashers. It might be worth a Google search on the topic or here on the forum they are regularly discussed. If you sort the earths and clean all connections they may not be too bad as standard.

You want LED tail lights for a Mk1?

The most unique and carefully designed approach is available from Mini Mania. However, be prepared to spend to get it. See:
