hello people,
ive just got into the mini scene after a year of wanting and now finally got a 1980 austin mini 1000 but having gear troubles, when i start in the mourning its really hard putting it in gears like im just pushing it against metal or something, theres also an oil leak not shore wether that has something to do with it?? does anyone have any tips or know whats wrong, or even a rough price guide of howmuch it would cost to get it sorted?

thanks, shaun.

mine does this...

i just assumes that because the engine's running a bit faster (because of the choke) that it would be harder getting it in gear.

try just putting the choke in when you want to change gear, then pulling it out again.

if you think it's a problem with the gearbox, Guessworks is definately your man :smartass:

it was doing when the choke was in anyway?? how long should i leave the choke on for in the mournings, i usually give it about 20-30seconds then push it in and drive away, or is that wrong??

Re the choke, that's perfectly ok, but will indicated that your car is ruuning just a tad rich.....

If your mini has a pre-verto ( or Diaphragm ) clutch which it may well have for an '80 ( you can tell because it has a long clutch arm on the side of the engine and the slave cylinder is on the top of the transfer case towards the rear ), this may just need adjusting, and a bleed of the clutch hydralic system.

I would also suspect that an oil change is due at thick oil does not help gearchanges.. before emptying the oil use on of those engine flush products which will remove some of the build up within the box and oil ways...

Replacing a gearbox is not expensive ( relatively speaking ) but it will require the removal of the engine. But it's worth trying to work it out first as it is a bit of overkill to replace the box when all which is needed is an couple of adjustements and a service :cheese:

Would you be able to identify whether it needed a good bleed by seeing if it goes into gear easier after pumping the clutch pedal three or four times prior to trying to selecting the gear?
