Last week i changed the rear wheel bearing on my 1982 mini city (drums all round), i replaced the original ball bearing with the needle roller type as recomended. the problem i have is that the hub locks up if the hub nut is done up any tighter that finger tight, and to me this just isnt right. i have checked that the outer races are properly seated in the hub, but the problem still occurs. Any ideas?

Did you fit the correct spacer between the bearings? I think it's a bit wider when using Taper Roller Bearings (I assume you mean't these and not Needle Roller?)

See attached extract from Haynes.

Well I would upload it but it appears I can no longer upload and also appear to now be a non member!!!!!

PM me your email and I'll send it as an attachment if you don't have a Haynes???

OOOPPSS - now I've renewed my expired membership I can post again!!!

had a similar scenario - replaced both rear bearings and they locked when tightened. ended up putting my old cleaned bearings back in as the new ones where a slightly different size... the new bearing set came with outer racers, but no inner spacer - i suspect this might be the problem....

If the Bearing Kit is bought from a reputable dealer then the bearings and spacer should be supplied as a "matched" set with reference numbers marked on each item to denote "set".

I had exactly the same problem with a set of bearings bought from DSN. So I bought a set of genuine Rover bearings and had exactly the same problem. I spoke to Steve at DSN who was very helpful. In the end I fitted a shim between the two bearings which allowed the hub nut to be torqued up to the correct figure and the bearing still free to let the hub turn.

There was no spacer in the set that i bought, though it looks like one is 'built in' to the inner part of the bearing. is it possible to get the original ball bearing types anymore?

If there is no spacer in the kit then both bearings should have the spacers built in, make sure you put these facing each other. If this is all correct you shouldn't get any concerns. I have fitted several taper roller kits to the back of my mini's & fingure crossed never had any problems. Have you checked the radius arm to check that the inner of the old bearing isn't stuck on the shaft. sometimes they will stick & the ball bearings & carrier will come away without it.

Did DSN supply the shim?

Just checked MiniSpares website and they offer 3 x Taper Roller Bearing Kits, all of which refer to the kit including a "Spacer".

Rear tapered roller wheel bearing kit, for one wheel. All post 1985 cars and the Mini Cooper S were equipped with very heavy duty tapered roller wheel bearings; these can be used on any Mini. Kit includes inner and outer bearings with spacer plus seals. If you are into preventative maintenance, then the tapered bearings are much easier to remove and re-pack than the ball bearing type. Stronger design, plus easy maintenance means they will last longer than the rest of the car. These are the later type with an improved bearing for use on larger wheels with a better O ring sealing qualitiy, introduced by Rover as a warranty buletin upgrade on minis with 13" wheels. O RING GOES BETWEEN FIRST BEARING AND BACKPLATE ON STUB AXLE-radius arms have a recess for the seal

I Assume the cheaper set are non-original and the others are Timken and Rover???

Somerford's Parts List/Diagram added for reference.........

i read that same product description but its not totally clear whether the spacer is part of the bearing or a completley seperate part.

I just bought 2 new rear taper bearings from minispares and there is no individual spacer included - instead each of the bearings has a built in spacer which protrudes about 3mm from the end of the bearing

In fact the bearings I bought from mini spares look the same as the one in this picture from the mini sport website

ive just sourced a different kit from motor parts direct, these one are made by timken, they went straight in n torqued up correctly. turns out the non genuine ones from minispares just werent up to the job (i will be taking them back).
