Well its an old myth that cracking an egg into a leaky radiator seals the leaky hole(s), now i think that i tried this about 4 years ago and had very sucssesful results, but then again i may have dreamt it as my memory is not that great! :D

So as this myth has never been tested by the 'mythbusters' i am asking you lot, does it actually work?

Discuss. >_<

heard of it before, but never done it. Radweld or Barr's radiator leak stuff normally is my course of action.

Wasn't it just one of those tricks used by dodgy used car salesmen as a temporary measure to stop the leak long enough to get someone to buy the car ?

Just like sawdust in the oil to stop Head Gasket Leaks !

Wouldn't the egg just boil, go off, then start stinking ?

i know it worked on my brothers Honda Integra as a temporary fix until he got a new radiator, but i couldn't tell you if it was the complete egg, or just the white. but i know it worked for about 3 weeks until he got it properly fixed.

eggs works but not always the gooey clear stuff basically boils then gets forced into the leak, all depends on the size of the leak,,, just a note of caution with bars leaks and red weld (maybe even egg) carefull what car u use it in, while it may be ok in older cars be real care full using it in more modern motors, i had to use it a few months back on my jeep, instead of just 145 notes for a new rad its turned into a new water pump, stat, new lpg vaporiser loads of flushing and a few small pieces of pipe, an extra 200 notes add to that weeks of hassle and looking for blockages, many newer cars have the pipe work go down to smaller bores in some places this spells trouble, rad weld and bars leaks managed to jam up my whole cooling system.

Yep that's what they do... it's their job to block up holes and pretty good at it they are too :D unfortunately it's not always the holes that you want blocking that get blocked up..... :D

Watch Mythbusters...it was proven that it does seal up the holes. But only for a certain amount of time.

So if you were to do this temporary fix you should go for just a single egg white rather than a whole egg?

Yes just use the white of the egg........... especially in light of the fact that the whole just will not fit through the hole in the top of the radiator

also take note of issues other people of had above..... A new or good second hand radiator could prevent further issues later on down the line ;)

Always cary a small bottle of rad seal, probably cost the same as six eggs form SPAR, plus it wont start to rot and smell after a week rolling round the boot

Yes but if you carry 6 eggs..... when you do break down you can use the steam to cook 5 of them and put the other one in the rad to fix the hole, while you send someone off to get the water to refill the rad  ....... that would be me in my case ;)
