oil all over this, but what is it i thought it was the casing for the transfer gears but not sure now, where could the leak be coming from, checked the timing cover and thats dry :(

i beleive thats the speedo drive housing would need taking apart cleaning and resealing,

Half moon crank seal behind the timing gear plate.

No not's not a U shaped O ring, it is soft seal in the shape of a half moon :(

NP don't forget to line all the cam timing marks up before you disassemble everything and loosen the cam nut and crank bolt. Then line up the dots before taking the chain and sprockets off.

Just doing mine with the engine out there are two types of seal though one softer than the other? regards Steve

The solid seal is the one to use if you're lucky enough to have one.

Try around the other Mini spares type shops, there may still be some available, however the latest "genuine" iones from Rover have caught a few people out including some "specialists" by being the soft one in a Rover package :thumbsup:
