Model: Mini Cooper 998cc Saloon
Year: 1968

Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible): Hi, I am new to the mini scene having just bought my first mini. Since I have had it a problem has developed, as I am driving along there seems a slight loss of power and then a loud bang from the rear of the car, this happens a few times during my journey.

I want to check out here first as I am not able to work on cars so will be taking it to a garage and would like to ensure that I am not going to be conned.

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem? I was told it has been converted to unleaded petrol (??) and have reciepts for this and work to the engine. Other than this is is standard.

Thanks

Janet

sounds like unburnt fuel exiting the engine and burning in the exhaust, check for running rich.

Does it bog down at a certain rpm? might want to check the timing and spark system aswell.

Yes, l think it is like a backfire, but it broke down today and would not start, there was also a strong smell of petrol in the car so it has been taken to the garage. I will let everyone know how it goes!

Well we are back on the road, long time I know.

The garage that I took it to said that the timing had 'gone out' and also something in one of the carburettors (needle??) had worn.

The final bill came to £135.67p and it has done wonders, no bangs.

Probably not the best idea to replace only one of the carb needles for it's long term happiness - carbs are a matched pair and needles should be the same - spotted a couple of replacements on ebay...

take your mini to somewhere that knows how to work on a classic car and have a service and tune up

isn't spam speed somewhere near your area ?
