I just bought a 1989 Mini Thirty. The car comes with a Philips 552 cassette player and 2 small speaker cubes in the rear parcel shelf. Although it works, I'd like to replace the HU with a Cd player and if necessary replace the speakers.
Please keep in mind that I'm not an audiophile and I'm 42 now, so I care more about hearing radio news and soft music. I just want the convenience of cd's (mp3) and if not very expensive a little more vivid sound.
As for the HU I have a spare sony unit I'll use.
I don't know (but I think so) that those speakers are not very good and because of their age they sound dull. I don't think that just replacing the HU will improve sound quality. Also, I don't want to drill the parcel shelf (I think in 1989 there were no speaker holes in place, just small ones to screw the cubes). So, I was thinking about replacing the speakers inside the cubes and keep them.
Does anybody knows the right size for the speakers inside the cubes?
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

whats your budget??
I'd recommend replacing both the Head Unit and speakers !! it doesn't matter what age/music your into a good head unit /speakers will ensure the quality is good.

As I said, I'd like to improve but not for the sake of it. I'm thinking to spend like 20 pounds on the speakers. I just bought a pair of 6" Xplod Sony's for my wifes car that sound good enough for me. I just don't want to make all the drill/cut that would be needed to install those on the parcel shelf.
I just want to know what size of speaker goes inside those cubes to make the replacement as clean as possible.

they may be 10cm, but i have a feeling they may be even smaller. To be honest, they're not very good at all, i think you may have to wait and get one of the rear shelf pods from Optimise Automotive when they start selling them, or bite the bullet and cut a couple of holes in your rear shelf

Finally I made some pods from 4" PVC tubing end caps, painted them black and fitted a pair of 4" JBL's. Not very good sound from those alone, but just enough.
