hey,

i've just swapped my drop gears to straight cut ones and am trying to torque up the first motion shaft nut up to 150lb ft. How am i supposed to secure it, to do it up? i've been trying this evening but cant even get it to 110 lb ft!

cheers,

Guennie

I suppose the gearbox is on the engine? The usual tactic is to engage 2 gears to lock the box up, you must have done well to get the nut off!

nope, the gearbox isn't on the engine at the moment. removing the old nut was a case of locking the 2 old drop gears or putting a set of stilsons on the other end of the shaft and using a long pole!

i've seen a picture on this forum of a guy that engaged 2 gears and it didn't work out well, a few teeth breaking off! i cant afford to break it!!!

I don't see how else you are going to get hold of a shaft on bearings covered in gear hubs.

if i was to pop some pot joints onto the the diff and partially mount it onto the driveshafts that are in the car still, i could leave it in gear and in theory would this lock the gear box without putting it into 2 gears. would this work? or have i not made it clear what im thinking of doing?!

In theory yes, but you'd still be using the final drive pinion and whatever gear you put it in. I don't think you'd break a healthy box by engaging 2 gears, it's how it's been done for years.

So that would be engaging two gears at once then. I'll have a read into it tonight and let you know how i get on!

Guessworks sorted it out for me! But yup, all sorted now, thanks! I have absolutely no idea what went wrong with mine, just unlucky I guess!

Good luck with yours if you've not done it yet, how'd it go if you have?
