I've seen it done in XEvalvers 16v mini, it uses the corsa electric power steering columb, including UJ's, with teh bottom section sleeved and welded onto the mini end of the column so it fits over the mini rack.

I believe someone makes a little control module, with an adjustable dial so you can choose how much effort the electric motor provides to assist you.

It was really rather strange, in a car with 8x13'' wheels and a heavy vauxhal engine, to be able to spin the wheel with 1 finger!
