I finally got my insurance sorted out, so I went out for a drive(my first solo drive ever) I was over the moon and absolutely loving my mini never had so much fun in my life, then my mate came out with me in his car and was behind me and he was going fast to catch up, as he had just pulled over, I was going about 35 and remembered that I had to turn right, so I braked hard ish and because at the time he was acelerating and probably kissing my bumper he ended up crashing into me on my first day of driving on my own. Basicly because he's 17 if we went through his insurance it would cost him loads in the end so he gave me £500 but a garage wont do it for that because labour is so much, so really it's wrote off. If I didn't know him it would of been simple and I would of just claimed through the guys insurance. I'm gutted because I got it for a bargain price of 1400 and it has no rust at all and has had new subframes tyres and alsorts, the previous owner spent lots of time and money on it, it's just had it's mot aswell. I had sold everything I own to get this car and run it and insure it, so I'm pretty gutted, i've just had an A-level exam and i've got more on the next few days and my mind has been all over the place because of what's happend. If I knew what I was doing I could probably repair it for less than the 500 but I don't, so I'm going to sell it when I get round to it. Maybe buy another mini in the furture if and when I manage to find a job.

What sort of a mate does this and then refuses to pay for the damage actually done? Insurance is there for a reason, if he was driving like a muppet then he'll have to learn by HIS expensive stupid mistake, hand him his £500 back and tell him to put it toward next years premium instead.

Oh man. I'd still claim off his insurance.
How else does he learn not to be a muppet?
It's a tough lesson, but a good one.

(Have you spoken to his parents - I recon they'll kill him for you...)

Agree with the above, and if he really is a mate then he should pay for it fully, I know I would.

as above, don't do him any favours and get your car sorted. Don't sell it. I bet he won't be selling his! And how is he getting the repairs done for his? if he's paying for his car to be fixed and not yours then he's not a good friend! There is no way anyone with any sense woudl think that £500 would fix that!
Go through his insurance, they may well write off your car but at least you'll get a decent payout which will allow you to buy another!

I agree with all above. Get him to pay up or go through his insurance. At the end of the day, if what you're saying is a true account then it was his fault. Make him pay

Thing is this arrangement happend through my dad and his dad, the deal is done so I've got the £500 and a smashed up mini -.- and in my mind it wasn't my fault (he should of kept his distance), I think he thinks that it was my fault for braking but even if I did an emergancy stop!! His dad thinks it was my my fault too but he should of been able to brake in time with his modern car with abs and kept his distance ofcourse.

Why should you pay for his mistake? I agree with everyone above - it was his fault and he should put it right. If he doesn't want to go through insurance then fine, but get a quote then get him to give you the cash for it.

EDIT: It was his fault, as you say even if you did an emergency stop he should have been at a safe enough distance and speed to avoid you.

"You break, you buy!!"

Get him to fix it, if he can't afford to do it himself he has no choice but to go through insurance, after all, that's why it's there.

If a friend did this to me and wouldn't cough up I'd be re-evaluating our relationship!

IMO It'd be worth going through the insurance and give him his money back. I wouldn't mind losing a mate over this if he wants to get pissy.
