Would i be able to disconnect and remove my ECU so i can clean the electric points without affecting it? In other words would it cause problems, and once you've disconnected it do you need a computer to set it back up?

Ecu Question!

No, unplugging it will not affect its operation

However, don't use abrasive media of any type on the electrical contacts
scotch brite, brillo pads, emery cloth wet & dry etc..... are a no no as the contacts would be gold plated to reduce signal loss and hence electrical failure......
your ecu picks up very small signal changes and adjusts the outputs to suit, if it loses this ability to recieve a "clean" signal then the ECU reads all the electrical "noise" trying to make sense of it all and all sorts of issues can be caused...... none of which will be friendly
