the noise is a wine in 1st and 2nd, and i can only just hear it in 3rd, and when you take your foot off the throttle from about 3-4000rpm, the noise seems to get worse as the engine speed drops, 4th doesnt make the noise when i do the same thing.
its a metro engine (12g) and has a metro box and final draive (3.44)
people say to me mini transmissions are normally noisy, but to what extent???
any help appreciated, many thanks.

They can tend to be ever so slighly noisy (mainly first as its straight cut) but not to the extent where it can be unbearable, it could be a possibility from your description of the whine in 1st and 2nd and slightly in 3rd that the layshaft is wearing away at the first gear end.

Usualythey'r |<----that---->| loud... :w00t: Do you have a garage with Mini knowlege near you?
Maybe they can listen and tell you. Noise idendification is always bad via words/text... :(

However.... Noise in 1./2./3. but not in 4. sounds like a worn layshaft/gear to me...
In forth the power goes direcly through the mainshaft, in 1./2./3. it's routed through the layshaft/gear.

The layshaft is a known weak spot in a Mini gearbox... But it's comprably easy to fix (still a engine out jobby).

it sort of sounds as though its coming from the drivers side though and would i be right in saying that first gear is nearer the timing gear?

Sounds like its just the syncro's just spinning up in 1st and 2nd and 3rd just sounds like gearbox noise. The early A boxes were even noisier than the A+ box you will have.

If you really want confirmation if its just general mini gearbox noise, feel free to bring it down to my workshop in upstreet, Canterbury.

whens the soonest youd be able to do this? its just a bit worrying because the old 998 engine annd gearbox blew, and im just wooried. when i built a 1275 (well 1310) i had a good look at the gear box for about 2 hours at least, it all looked fine, other than a single tooth missing off what i worked out to be 3rd gear synchro (bronzy coloured thing).
