By late Metro I am assuming that you mean the non A-series powered variety? If so then it is by no means a straightforward swap. K-series twin cam engines (as in GTi Metros etc) have been done plenty of times and there are many knowledgeable people on here that can advise you. Any other engine from a Metro is simply not worth bothering with.
Now I'm not entirely sure but I dont think the Princess used an A-series engine. There probably aren't many decent Princess's left now and parts availability for the engines isn't going to be fantastic. As for converting from auto to manual even if it did fit, would be a total waste of effort.
To be honest if you are on a budget, stick with the A-series. There are plenty about, parts availability is excellent and you can tune the nuts off them.

Hope this helps.

Mike
