A while ago i read the the engine in the mk3 Elfs are the 998 cooper engines but detuned. is this true?

Does that mean it would have the 12G295 head? What else is the same/different? do the coopers have twin carbs?

Thanks >_<

If you type up your engine number on here we can tell you exactly what you have (if it's the original engine of a mklll elf- the prefix should be 9AE)...

There was a lot of different spec 998 engines but this is the first i've heard that elf recieved a de-tuned 998 cooper engine - and the main problem i have with that statement is that a de-tuned 998 cooper engine would simply be a standard 998. Nothing special.

If someone can prove/de-bunk the de-tuned engine theory i'd be most grateful.

Is that definatley the code? I don't mean to question your ability read >_< just making sure that's the exact engine number - are any of them rusty - as i can't find anything on that code - It's laid out like a metro code but i can't match any of the particulars to metro specs....

The 99H part if fine however and was introduced in 1970 - a year after your car was born - but it's on the cusp!

Do you know if the engine has dished pistons?

99H249AH2982 =

998cc

Lucas C40 dynamo

Alternative final drive ratio

Standard ratio remote control gearbox 4 speed synchromesh

so it could well be from a 1968/69 Elf.

The Elf Hornet had a 998 engine from January 1963, getting on for a year before the 997 became the 998 Cooper so its more correct to say that the Cooper is a tuned Elf/Hornet engine.
