I am getting a stage 3! 1293 engine, and I am going to fit 1.3:1 rockers onto it...

I also need a new cam... as I am going to be town driving mainly, but I also want the grunt when I get onto the open roads and motorways.... (power to overtake)

Now I have been looking at two cam's a Piper 266 and a Kent 276..

Which do you think is going to be best suited for my new engine?

I would love a cam that will make my enigne pull like a train between 2500-4000 RPM and something where if you crusing at 60-70, and you put your foot down a bit more, I want the enigne to pickup and fly...

What do you think guys?

OR if you guys know a better cam that will do what I want please don't hasitate to say

Sw5 it's a better profiled Kent 276

yeah I would agree with alburglar and say SW5 - its one of the best cams for your sort of application.

my SW5 is amazing, even in a near standard 1275, its smooth at idle, but when you get into the higher rev range it cranks up the torque

Where do I get a a SW5? and how much are they?

1.3:1 rockers? Do you already have them? Have you considered 1.5s? They'd make a bigger impact but make sure u get full roller rockers.

If your running a 1293 then at least put a 286 cam in it. As the engine gets bigger, teh cam becomes less noticable and 286's aren't as bad as everyone says in a 1275, let alone a 1293.

Roller tips will be fine, but go for 1.5:1 as the 1.3:1 ratio is almost standard.

Also I actully have 1.7:1 full rockers, but looking at getting a lower set...

1.7 rockers will be too much on that engine especialy with a cam too.

I've not used Swiftune because I like Kent, have used Kent lots of times and like the way thier cams feel and work, but I guess this is a matter of opinion, but defo go with something along the lines of a 286 profile. All I can say though - don't use Piper!

the alternative to the 286 is the SW10, Not tried it but it is ment to have been profiled on the 286.

Hi,

Ive heard A C Dodd say that a A+ 998 cam with 1.7 ratio rockers is similar to an SW5 when in a big bore engine.

As you already have the 1.7 ratio rockers, maybe give this a try? or consider it as an option.

But in all honesty, I think the sw5 is a bit slow. I know its torquey and perfect for town driving etc etc, but i prefer to rev the engine a little, and from experience know that even long duration cams like 296's and such can be driven at slow speeds about the place without too much drama, and when you get out onto the open road they more than make up for it.


I havent tried one, so this really isnt first hand info, but ive heard really good things about the morspeed trackday cam, its got a duration of 290 i think, but apparently is brilliant when tootling along and great when flooring it.

I have this cam in my 1293, and would 100% agree. Although my fuelling isn't set up correctly yet, the engine is happy even below 2krpm in 4th at 25-30mph, pulling along nicely.
