Depends what your going for really, have you got a sub? are you going to get a sub?? If your not then the rectangular Vibe QB69's are great when run off an amp - really bassy!!! Can be bought for about £60-70 a pair I think.
I got some Vibe Slick 6x9's from Halfords (to replace the above speakers after I blew them) and for £40 they are pretty damn good! Would deffo recommend them if you dont want to spend so much on the QB69's.
Pioneer also do some good speakers, the TS series 6x9s are really good quality but are also about £60-70
Go with Vibe! Its a quality make and British!!!

JBL's are pretty good. ive currently got two in the parcel shelf and they're pretty good, and have a surprising amount of bass. Im planning to get another pair for under the rear seat too. If you ask me, unless you're spending a lot of money, Subs and amps are just too much effort to cram into a Mini. besides, i need what little space the boot has
Same, I have a pair of JBL 6x9s running from my JVC head unit. Speakers are 100watt max, head unit is 4x40watt.
Wired them in and sent the balance to just the two speakers wired in (so i believe i'm getting 80 watt on each speaker?)
Sounds lovely.
Make sure you get your levels right!
You can spend thousands on a system and if it's badly set up it will soud gash!
I've been in bands and had to do my own sound levels for all sorts of gigs so i'm pretty sure i've got it spot on.

I was just thinking that Ouster!
Volume doesn't always mean good sound quality.

b)would notice the 2dB difference!
You will 'hear' what you listen to differently at different SPL's, so a system that produces 54352546375645dB may well sound a bit poo at a sensible level.
But yes a simple setup can be much *ahem* simpler, cheaper and sometimes sound much better. Problem with all sorts of components, subs, crossovers, amps etc can be if its not set up right it will likely be a bit of an auditory mess!
