Depends...what type of Air filter do you have, as the cone filters can make a loud hissing induction noise..

Is it running normal? If its idling a little high it could be a vacuum leak or as stated already just your air breather.

Yer if she is running ok then, it is still most likely your Carburettor sucking air in. is the filter casing back on properly?
If there are some anomilies with Idle, and revs then there might be an Air leak around the manifold.

So are you driving around with the Choke out? Did you have the car set up properly when the LCB was installed? sounds like its running a little lean and could do with a Rolling Road Setup.
to check for an air leak spray WD40 all around the intake manifold and carb, see if the engine note and running changes at all..

sounds sill but is the vacuum advance pipe connected??
its a thin pipe that runs from the carburettor to the distributor..... my first mini never had one <---lil did i know at that time :)

id also just check/tighten all the bolts where the exhaust connects to the engine, could be leaking gasket from there?

May be a silly answer but just a thought.

Between the water pump and the cylinder head, is usually a small by-pass hose. I had a problem with these splitting regularly, spraying coolant onto the block and causing a hissing effect. If it did not his on the way to KFC (maby because the engine wasn't hot enough, and/ or pressure hadn't built up in the system) but did on the way back because the engine had heated up this could be causing your noise. May well not be this, but may well be worth a check. :)

Regards Alex

That shouldn't create any adverse effects if it wasn't connected.

As for the bypass hose...its main use is to allow a small circulation of coolant around the head to prevent hot spots as the engine warms up to normal running temperature, before the thermostat opens, so if it was split you would of found out straight away :P

Its odd that it happens on & off...obviously a vacuum leak would appear permanently. Still, carry a a can of WD40 with you and the next time it occurs just give the engine a quick spray when you can, see for the changes in note.

Also, have you had it setup properly yet? If you can get away with driving with the choke out permanently without flooding your engine its definitely running to lean! Its worth getting that sorted if not :)
