ok ive got a 79 round nose beauty and me and my dad noticed that the passenger side subframe tower mount bolt (the huge beasty) wasnt in properly and would of explained the banging every time i went over a bump which would suggest that the whole subframe was moving.

so..........

i bought a second hand one of a lovely person on here and it arrived today yay

but no........

it wont tighten it just rotates on closser inspection the holes looking down them dont look like they line up there out by about 5mm

so has anyone got any ideas???

Hi,
I had a similar issue when I changed the bushes on mine. As far as I know, there are two methods, one slightly safer than the other.

1) This is the one I used. Use a trolley jack, and jack the car up on the passenger side until you can get an axle stand with a piece of wood on top under the sill near the jacking point. Remove the bolt (or towing eye) at the front passenger-side subframe mount. Then remove the jack so that the car's just sat on the stand. Put the jack under the passenger-side front subframe mount and gently raise it. This will tilt the subframe back, and should get the holes to all line up. Insert the Big fat top bolt first but don't tighten it fully, then lower the jack and get the front mount bolt/towing eye back in. Jack up the car again and remove the axle stand. Once it's back on four wheels, torque everything up to spec.

2) Loosen the other top bolt and both front mount bolts but don't fully remove them. Put the car in reverse and just tweak the key so it tries to turn over. I know one person who did it this way, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Cheers,
Alyn.
