i am wanting to remove my fuel tank (for inspection and cleaning), and just wondered how difficult it is and if i need any special tools (removing fuel pipe)?

Syphon all the fuel out the tank, remove the spare wheel, undo the strap, bring tank into boot, rotate it a bit and undo the breather pipe and feed pipe. You'll probably need a socket for undoing the strap and a screw driver for undoing the clip holding the feed pipe on.

dont rely on the fuel guage saying its empty.

easy to do just try not to spill the fuel on the battery
A little bit of fuel came out of the fuel pipe when i took mine out so if you have a nice boot carpet it may be wise to remove this (but then again you'll have to anyway), not as hard job as you may think but Haynes Manuel useful as always.
